Story

As part of Tyneside Outdoors' 10th anniversary I'm taking on a big cycling challenge.  As one of the charity's trustees I've committed to try and raise some funds to support our work in Walker, Benwell and South Shields.  As a keen (or maybe slightly fanatical) cyclist I also want to help raise the profile of cycling for young people, particularly our Temple Raiders group in South Shields.

The aim of the cycle ride is: To encourage our young people to take part in more exercise in the form of cycling as individuals and as part of a group.  Raise awareness of the problems and issues young people face in attempting to be both environmentally friendly and have fun on their bikes. Lastly, to raise as much money as possible to help continue the charities work.

This challenge will take the form of a cycle race from our shop, TO bike, in South Shields to the Algarve in southern Portugal both physically and virtually. I will be riding approximately 80 miles per day en-route to Portugal whilst the young people of Tyneside outdoors will be set the challenge of matching, or beating, the daily mileage achieved across their groups. The statistics are quite significant - circa 1250 miles distance with 25,000m of ascent (that’s two and three quarters times the height of Mount Everest!) so it will be a real test of those involved.

Who will get there first!!??

As noted above one of my aims is to raise as much money as possible to enable the charity to continue its work.  You can keep track of where I've got to and how our Temple Raiders are getting on.  You will also be able to check on how well our fundraising is going which is where your donation will help a great deal.  Every single donation, no matter how small, will be gratefully received and put to good use.

Tyneside Outdoors would like to give their grateful thanks to the following companies who have been generous in their support of this venture.
MHWPR, Back Yard Bikes in Gateshead, DF Fitness in North Shields, Band of Climbers, Showers Pass, G-Ride in Portimao, TSA Riley and Edge Public Solutions.

Updates

Arrived safe, and surprising well, in Algarve to a great welcome from friends and relatives.  What a journey.  A few days of rain, one or two nearly all day, but largely a trouble-free journey all the way accompanied by a number of cycling friends on different parts of the journey.

Thank you to everyone for their support and generous donations over the last month or so, it has been great to get so much support and to have achieved the £5,000 target. Thank you!

You can still donate and Tyneside Outdoors will always need your support to help with its work so please don't feel like you've missed the opportunity.  Maybe you could try your own adventure?!!!!

Paul is getting very near to the end of his epic journey.  Tomorrow he'll complete the last leg of the journey and celebrate with his friends and family with a well-earned rest and maybe a few cold ones at Helders.

Please send Paul your support and best wishes for his last day!

Half way there! 75 miles covered over rolling Cantabria countryside. There was a tense moment when at one stop they were showing the Vuelta a España and it nearly stopped them in their tracks! Two more days in Spain then Portugal.

Made it to Portsmouth!  397 miles down from Tyneside to the ferry terminal and a day's rest on the journey to Santander in Spain.  The Temple Raiders are well behind but have a couple of group activities up their sleeve yet!

Here's Paul's Stava link for the last leg of the journey through England. https://strava.app.link/MB9kuLvYvMb

We're officially launched! We had a nice turn out of our Temple Raiders at TO bike to join me on Monday.  Over the next few weeks we'll be trying to recruit more riders and crucially more supporters for the challenge.  If you want to get involved by riding or supporting the Race to Portugal please get in touch.

Supporting

Tyneside Outdoors

At Tyneside Outdoors, we offer a professional Youth and Community Work service to residents in disadvantaged areas of Tyneside. We do this by working with young people in our youth groups and encouraging them to take part in a range of out-of-door activities to assist their personal development and most importantly- to have fun!
The organisation was created to fulfil a recognised need within inner city communities, to engage people in informal education through outdoor activities, and was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with the Charity Commission in March 2014.
